How Trauma-Informed Care Rebuilds Lives
Trauma-Informed Care is an approach that acknowledge the impact
of trauma in a person’s everyday life and recognizes the potential paths for
its recovery. It first recognizes the signs and symptoms of trauma in clients,
families, staff or anyone and then integrate this knowledge to make policies,
procedures, and practices that can be used to avoid re-traumatization. Now why is
it necessary? Many people have gone through traumatic stages in their lives. It
could be childhood trauma, child abuse, bully, neglection, violence, loss or
any trouble. These are often untreated and cause anxiety, emotional
instability, high neuroticism, affects our mental health, prolonged overthinking
leading to stress or depression and in some cases isolation. Therefore, to
reduce the traumatic experiences, it is very important to heal and recover at
the right time. Here is where Trauma-Informed care comes in need. But how does
it rebuild our broken lives? The Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) identifies the root
cause of the trauma. It studies and addresses the symptoms and signs and then formulate
the procedures that can be applied and then imply those by creating certain conditions
where people feel safe, heard and are supported in their healing journey. In
cases of interpersonal trauma, which can make it hard to trust in others again,
TIC makes sure to provide consistent empathy and transparency to foster healing
relationships that can help build healthy relationships. According to Substance
Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA, 2014), safety is the
foundation to begin with the healing process. It is very necessary to create a
safe environment for the client to feel comfortable. Every story is heard and the
survival strength is evoked in them. A hope to let go and move on is inculcated
in them. Rather than seeing them as damaged, they are seen as capable of healing
and rebuilding new paths to restart with their lives.
