IMPORTANCE OF PARENTS - A SHORT STORY

~Vedika Bhatt

Today when I was going back from the school, I followed my way through the forest as I love to be on grassy mountains where I find peace. But suddenly I saw a girl of another school in her school uniform who was sitting on a trail of a mountain lost in her thoughts in such a way that she did not even notice me that I was standing aside her watching her. There was no one around. I went to her and said - "Hey, I am Jasmine. And you? and why sitting here? What I could determine was that she was a very polite one. "Eliza from xyz school" - she replied. Oh! Then why sitting here? - I asked. Her face was not so bright and delighted, she was quiet for a while and then replied - "Actually......". "Yeah, yeah please say, if I would be able to help you out, I'll definitely do". - I encouraged her. I thought she will refuse, but she spoke.

'Two days before my father died because of an accident. He was a businessman. Somehow my mother managed for his funeral procession. But she is worried for the family in the long run. For my education, grandmother's medical care and many more things. My dad was the only one who used to earn in the entire family. My mom is not educated well, so she is a housewife. My grandmother is suffering from asthma. My grandfather died seven years ago".

Hearing all this, I recalled the incidence of the morning. I had fought with my mom for not taking me to a trip on this summer vacation. As all of my friends had planned a vacation. But my parents were not taking me. After the fight I came to school and after the school I met this girl. This was all I was thinking in my mind.

I was just speaking to Eliza only, but till then my mom arrived to take me in her car. Before I went, I was looking at her and she looked at me too giving an appealing smile. She knew my mom was waiting in the car. So she said - "Your mom is waiting for you. You should go. I felt very sorrow as I was not able to help her.

After stepping inside the car, my mom said - "Your dad has now planned a trip to Goa. You were so livid  on me, so I requested your dad. He finally agreed. I hope now you will not complain.

Though I was very happy, but I did not show my excitement, I was lost already in my lamentation for Eliza. After I reached home I hugged my mom and dad. A tear was just to fall from my eyes. I rushed vigorously to my room and started crying. Today's day did not only make me desolated but also gave me a great grand lesson.

Earlier I was complaining for my life, my parents and everything. I used to consider my luck as very unfortunate. The thought that used to make me worried, vanished in a couple of seconds when the thought of loosing my parents haunted in my mind.
